One of the first questions families ask when planning a session is, “Where should we do our photos?”
The truth is that the best family photo location isn’t always the most popular one. It’s the location that allows your family to relax, connect, and simply be together.
When families look back at their photographs years from now, they rarely remember the exact location. What they remember is how it felt. The way their child held their hand. The laughter that happened between poses. The way the evening light looked as they walked along the beach together.
That being said, choosing the right location can help create a beautiful backdrop for those moments and Victoria is filled with incredible options. From rugged coastlines and sandy beaches to open fields and forest trails, there is no shortage of beautiful places to explore.
As a Victoria family photographer, these are some of my favourite family photo locations throughout Greater Victoria.
Island View Beach
If I had to choose one location that consistently works well for families, Island View Beach would be near the top of the list.
Located in Central Saanich, this beach offers an incredible amount of variety. The shoreline stretches for kilometres, giving children plenty of room to run, explore, and simply be themselves. There are sandy areas, driftwood, tall grasses, and beautiful ocean views, all within a short walking distance.
One of the things I love most about Island View Beach is that it never feels restrictive. Families don’t need to worry about standing perfectly still or keeping little ones in one place. The location naturally encourages movement and connection, which often leads to the most meaningful photographs.
Sunset sessions here are particularly beautiful. The soft light reflecting off the water creates a warm, timeless feel that works beautifully for family photograph
Best for:
Families with young children
Sunset sessions
Beach lovers
Natural, relaxed photography
Dallas Road
Dallas Road is one of Victoria’s most iconic locations and for good reason.
The combination of ocean views, coastal grasses, dramatic skies, and open space creates a setting that feels uniquely West Coast.
What I love about Dallas Road is that it offers both simplicity and beauty. There are no distractions competing for attention. The focus stays on your family and the connection you share while the coastline provides a stunning backdrop.
The wide-open spaces also work incredibly well for children who need room to move. We can walk, explore, and create photographs that feel natural rather than forced.
Best for:
-Ocean views -West Coast scenery -Families with active children -Sunset photography
Witty’s Lagoon
Witty’s Lagoon is one of those locations that feels beautiful in every season.
The park itself is easy to access and offers a wonderful mix of green space, shoreline, driftwood, and coastal scenery. The atmosphere tends to feel a little quieter than some of the more popular beaches right downtown Victoria, making it a great choice for families who appreciate a slower pace.
I often recommend Cordova Bay for families looking for a location that feels relaxed, timeless, and naturally beautiful.
Best for:
-Family photography -maternity photography -Smaller children -Coastal scenery
Esquimalt Lagoon
Esquimalt Lagoon is another favourite for family sessions, particularly in the evening.
The wide beach, grassy areas, and incredible sunsets create a beautiful setting for photographs that feel both elegant and relaxed.
Because there is so much open space, children have the freedom to move naturally throughout the session. We can spend time near the water, walk along the shoreline, and create a gallery with plenty of variety.
The evening light here is often stunning and photographs beautifully throughout much of the year.
Best for:
-Sunset sessions -Families with young children -Beach photography -Sessions full of activity such as kite flying
Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park
Not every family is drawn to the beach and that’s one of the reasons I love Beaver Lake.
The forest trails, towering trees, and open grassy fields create a completely different feel while still offering a beautiful backdrop.
This location feels calm, organic, and timeless. It is especially beautiful in June when the daisies are blooming, but it photographs beautifully throughout the year.
For families who feel most at home surrounded by nature and open space, Beaver Lake is often a perfect fit.
Best for:
-Forest lovers -Year-round sessions -Families looking for something different than the beach -Natural scenery and daisies in June
Beacon Hill Park
For families looking for a beautiful mix of stunning landscaped grounds with ponds and arched bridges, along with more natural grassy fields and native trees. The open landscape creates a feeling of space and the seasonal wildflowers are spectacular.
This location photographs beautifully at sunset and works especially well for families who are drawn to a more minimal, scenic backdrop.
The most beautiful location is not always the right location.
When helping families choose where to have their photos taken, I consider more than just the scenery. The age of your children, the season, accessibility, lighting, and the overall feeling you’re hoping to create all play an important role.
Some families love exploring the beach. Others feel most comfortable in the forest. Some want dramatic ocean views while others prefer something simple and understated.
My role is to help guide you toward a location that complements your family and allows space for genuine connection.
At the end of the day, the most meaningful photographs rarely happen because of the location itself. They happen because your family felt comfortable enough to be present with one another. The location simply helps tell the story.
