Choosing the best location for your family photo locations in Saanich, BC is about more than finding a pretty backdrop.
The best location is usually the one that gives your family room to move, explore, settle in, and be together without feeling overly posed. Saanich has so many beautiful options for that, from quiet forest trails and Garry oak meadows to beaches and open spaces with room for children to be themselves.
As a Victoria family photographer, I help every family choose a location that fits the season, the age of your children, the feeling you want your photos to have, and the kind of experience you want to remember.
Here are a few of my favourite family photo locations in Saanich.
PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park)
PKOLS, also known as Mount Douglas Park, is a beautiful option for families who want a location that feels natural, varied, and distinctly Vancouver Island.
The park has forest trails, rocky areas, open views, and pockets of soft light that work especially well in the evening. It is a lovely choice for families who enjoy being outdoors and do not mind a little walking or exploring during their session.
I especially love PKOLS for families with older children who can move through the trails easily and can be safe at the top as we look out at the picturesque views, or for anyone who wants photos that feel a little more adventurous without needing to travel far from the city.
Because this area can feel quite different depending on where we begin, I always help choose the right part of the park based on the season, light, and your family. PKOLS is also a culturally significant place, so it is important to treat the space with care while we are there.
Cadboro-Gyro Park
Cadboro-Gyro Park is one of those locations that works beautifully for families who want a relaxed beach session without needing to go too far outside Victoria.
There is a mix of sand, shoreline, grassy space, driftwood, and open sky with a few homes in the background. It gives children room to play and gives us a lot of variety within one location. It is especially lovely for younger children because there is space to move naturally and nothing about the session needs to feel too formal.
This is a great choice if you want your photos to feel light, connected, and a little playful. Bare feet, movement, cuddles near the water, children running toward the shoreline, splashing in the water, and a quieter moment together at the end of the session all fit naturally here.
Sunset is often especially beautiful at Cadboro-Gyro, though timing matters because the beach can be busier during warmer months.
Francis/King Regional Park
For families who love the feeling of being surrounded by trees, Francis/King Regional Park is one of my favourite forest options near Saanich.
The park has beautiful Douglas-fir forest, soft trails, mossy textures, and a quieter feeling than some of the more open beach locations. It is a wonderful choice for families who want their photos to feel warm, grounded, and timeless.
Francis/King works particularly well in the fall, winter, and early spring when the forest feels especially rich and green. It can also be a beautiful option for a session earlier in the day because the trees soften the bright mid-day light naturally.
For sessions with young children, I usually keep the walk simple and choose an area that gives us enough space to move without making the experience feel like an adventure. The goal is always to create a session that feels easy for your family, not like another thing you need to manage.
The Gardens at HCP
The Gardens at HCP are a lovely option for families who want something a little more refined while still feeling natural and relaxed.
The gardens offer texture, colour, pathways, flowers, and a softer, more curated backdrop than a forest or beach. This location can be especially beautiful in late spring and summer when the gardens are full and the light is warm.
I love this option for families who are drawn to a more editorial feel but still want their photos to have movement and connection. It works beautifully with intentional wardrobe choices, soft colour, texture, and pieces that feel special without looking overly formal.
Because gardens change so much throughout the year, I would always recommend choosing this location based on what is in bloom and the feeling you are hoping for in your photos. Keep in mind, there is a fee for entry and we always need to verify when they are open to photography sessions.
A Quiet Neighbourhood, Your Backyard, or in Your Own Home in Saanich
Not every family session needs to happen at a well-known park or beach.
Some of my favourite images happen in a family’s own backyard, in the comfort of their own home, or in a place that already feels familiar to their children. This can be especially meaningful for families with babies or young children who are most comfortable in their own space.
An at-home family session can include the slower parts of your day: making breakfast, reading together, playing outside, holding your baby near a window, or simply being together in the home you have built.
For families who want their photos to feel personal and connected to this season of life, an at-home session can be just as beautiful as any outdoor location.
How to Choose the Right Family Photo Location in Saanich for Your Family Photos
When I help families choose a location, I think about more than the scenery. I consider the age of your children, your visions, how much walking feels realistic, the season, the light, your wardrobe, and the overall feeling you want your photos to have.
A beach may be perfect for a family who wants movement and play. A forest may feel more fitting if you want something quieter, more intimate while still allowing room for exploration. A garden may be the right choice if you love colour, texture, and a slightly more editorial setting.
The best location is the one that gives your family room to be yourselves.
If you are planning family photos in Saanich or Victoria, I would love to help you choose a location that feels like the right fit for your family and this season of your life.
