Oak Bay is one of my favourite areas in Greater Victoria for family photos.

There is something about the combination of ocean, Garry oak landscapes, quiet streets, old trees, and soft coastal light that makes it feel both timeless and relaxed. It is a beautiful choice for families who want photographs that feel connected, artful, and natural without needing a big production.

As an Victoria family photographer, I help families choose a location, plan wardrobe, and create a session that feels easy from the beginning. The goal is never to make your family perform for the camera. It is to give you space to be together while I document the connection already there.

Here are a few of my favourite Oak Bay locations and what makes each one special.

Uplands Park

Uplands Park is one of the most beautiful and distinctive locations in Oak Bay.

The Garry oak meadow, winding trails, open fields, and natural textures create a setting that feels quiet, soft, and very Vancouver Island. It is especially beautiful in spring and early summer when the landscape has more colour and life, though it can be lovely throughout the year.

I love Uplands Park for families who want a location that feels a little more editorial without feeling overly styled. The open space gives children room to move, while the oak trees and meadow create a beautiful backdrop for more connected, close-up moments.

This location works especially well with wardrobe that has texture and movement. Linen, soft knits, cotton, muted colour, and pieces that go together rather than match can all feel beautiful here.

Because Uplands Park is a sensitive natural area, I keep sessions respectful and simple. We stay on appropriate paths, avoid disturbing the landscape, and let the location be beautiful without trying to overuse it.

Cattle Point

Cattle Point is a wonderful option for families who love the ocean but want something a little more rugged and open than a sandy beach.

The shoreline, rocky edge, wide views, and soft evening light make it especially beautiful for sunset sessions. It has a calm, expansive feeling that works well for families who want photos that feel coastal and a little more cinematic.

This is a great location for families with older children who enjoy exploring, or for families who are happy to slow down and take in the view together. There is room for movement, but the location also invites quieter moments: holding hands near the water, children tucked into their parents, or a family walking together along the shoreline.

Cattle Point can be windy, which is part of its charm but something I always consider when helping you plan wardrobe and timing.

Willows Beach

Willows Beach is a classic Oak Bay location for families who want something relaxed, easy, and playful.

The sandy shoreline, grassy areas, and ocean views give us a lot of variety without needing to walk far. It is a particularly good option for families with young children because there is room to run, collect rocks, play near the water, and settle into the session naturally.

I love Willows Beach for summer sessions, especially when families want their photos to feel warm and full of movement. It can also be beautiful in the quieter months, when the beach feels more open and the light is softer.

This is not a location where you need to arrive perfectly coordinated or worry about keeping everyone still. The beauty of a beach session is that children can be children. Some of the best images often happen in the in-between moments, when someone is laughing, running, being held, or simply taking in the water.

The Oak Bay Waterfront and Quiet Neighbourhood Streets

Oak Bay has so many quiet pockets that can work beautifully for a family session.

Sometimes a small stretch of waterfront, a tree-lined street, or a familiar walk near your home can create photos that feel more personal than a large park. This is especially true for families who live in Oak Bay and want their images to feel connected to the place they are raising their children.

A quieter neighbourhood session can feel relaxed and intimate. It can include a walk, a stop for ice cream, time near the water, or simply the feeling of your family in the place you call home.

For families who want something less location-driven and more story-driven, this can be a beautiful option.

What to Wear for Family Photos in Oak Bay

Oak Bay photographs beautifully when wardrobe feels intentional but not overly matched.

I usually recommend choosing a palette that feels cohesive rather than identical. Soft neutrals, warm browns, cream, muted blue, olive, or a subtle pattern can all work beautifully depending on the location and season. If you are partial to colour, add a pop of colour intentionally such as a red scarf or boots.

Texture is often what brings wardrobe together. Think linen, cotton, knitwear, denim, suede, or pieces with a little movement. The goal is for everyone to look like they belong together, not like they are wearing the same outfit.

For beach and coastal sessions, I generally recommend footwear that allows you to move naturally. Bare feet can work beautifully on the sand, while simple neutral shoes or intentional footwear can feel more natural than heels or anything that makes it difficult to walk comfortably.

How to Choose the Right Oak Bay Location for Your Family

Oak Bay has a few very different landscapes within a small area, so choosing the right one can make the experience feel much easier from the beginning.

For families with young children, Willows Beach is often the simplest choice. There is a short walk from parking, plenty of space to move, and enough variety that children can play naturally while we create photos. It is a good fit if you want the session to feel light, relaxed, and full of movement.

Uplands Park is beautiful for families who are drawn to softer, more natural images. The Garry oak meadow and informal trails create a quieter feeling, with more texture and less of a traditional beach-session look. It is especially lovely for families who enjoy a little wandering and want their photos to feel connected to the landscape.

Cattle Point is a wonderful choice if you love the coast but want something more open and dramatic. The rocky shoreline and wide water views are especially beautiful near sunset. Because it can be breezy and the terrain is less suited to running toddlers, I usually recommend it for families with older children, maternity sessions, or families who are comfortable staying close together while we explore a smaller area.

The time of year matters too. Uplands Park is especially beautiful in spring, when the meadow has more softness and colour. Willows Beach is lovely in late spring and summer, while Cattle Point can be beautiful year-round for families who are drawn to a more coastal, wind-in-your-hair feeling.

You do not need to know which location is right before reaching out. I help every family choose a place based on the age of their children, the season, your wardrobe, and the feeling you want your photos to have.

When to Schedule Your Oak Bay Family Session

The best time for family photos in Oak Bay depends on the location and the style you are looking for.

Spring brings softer green landscapes and beautiful light at Uplands Park. Summer is lovely for beach sessions, especially later in the evening when the light is gentler. Fall can bring warm texture and quieter locations. Winter sessions can be especially beautiful for families who love a more moody coastal feeling or prefer an at-home session.

For outdoor sessions, I usually recommend choosing a time when the light is soft and your children are most likely to feel rested and comfortable. For many families, that means early evening in the warmer months, though every family is different.

A Few Things That Help an Oak Bay Family Session Feel Easier

The goal is not to create an hour of perfectly behaved children or perfectly posed photos, but we will plan ahead to make the experience as seamless as possible. The less you go into it with specific expectations, the more authentic your photos are going to turn out.

One of the biggest tips I like to give is to allow for enough time before your session so no one is rushing. You don’t want to start your session off stressed and anxious. Another great tip is to bring a simple snack and water for you and your family. A snack break is always a great way to reset. When it comes to your outfits, be sure to choose clothing that lets everyone move comfortably. For beach and coastal locations, layers can be helpful because the temperature often changes quickly near the water.

During the session, your kids don’t need to stay still or smile on cue. They can explore, ask to be held, run toward the water, need a break, or be a little shy at first. Even when they aren’t listening at their best, just smile through it so that your face doesn’t show frustration in your images. I will be there to guide you as much or as little as you need throughout the session, but I also leave room for the moments that happen naturally. These moments are often the images families come back to most: a hand being held, a child tucked into a parent’s shoulder, laughter in the middle of a walk, or the way your family looks together in a place that already feels like home.

Planning Your Oak Bay Family Photography Session

The best family photos are never the ones where you are stiffly posed and smiling at the camera. They come from the way your child reaches for your hand, the way you hold your baby close, the way your family laughs together, and the small moments that often go unnoticed in the middle of everyday life.
